The Boston Red Sox got a much-needed win on Wednesday night against the Tampa Bay Rays to keep pace with the New York Yankees in the AL Wild Card Chase. First baseman Bobby Dalbec wasn’t in the lineup for Boston, but he’s likely to return on Thursday and could add some value as a low-cost option for MLB DFS lineups. The Red Sox continue their series tonight against the Rays in Tampa at 7:10 p.m. ET. Dalbec has seen his greatest success this season against left-handed pitching and can be picked up on FanDuel for just $2,500, and DraftKings for $3,100.
Tampa lefty starter Shane McClanahan gave up eight hits and a home run in his last start on August 27 against Baltimore. McClanahan is also among the most expensive options in Thursday’s MLB DFS player pool, at $10,100 on both FanDuel and DraftKings. McClure’s top MLB DFS picks for September 2, 2021
One of McClure’s top MLB DFS picks for Thursday is Braves outfielder Joc Pederson, who can be added for $2,900 on FanDuel and $3,900 on DraftKings. On Tuesday night against the Dodgers, Pederson had a home run and a walk for a 27-point performance on FanDuel and 16 points on DraftKings.
Pederson got off to a hot start in August against St. Louis, and has a great chance to do the same in September against Colorado starter Chi Chi Gonzalez. In four career at bats against Gonzalez, Pederson has a couple of hits and an RBI. With runners in scoring position, Pederson has hit .289 and has 41 RBI in 2021, and he should have a good opportunity to improve on those numbers Thursday night.
McClure’s optimal MLB DFS draft strategy also includes stacking Pederson with Atlanta first baseman Freddie Freeman ($4,000 on FanDuel and $5,900 on DraftKings). The Braves slugger is only a couple of days removed from a two-game stretch where he scored two runs on three hits with a homer over August 29-30.
Freeman has shown signs of a return to form recently, with six hits over his last five games. Gonzalez was reactivated off the COVID-19 injured list on August 18 and promptly gave up three runs in as many innings during a start against San Diego. Freeman typically bats third, and opposing hitters in that spot have hit .273 with four doubles and and three home runs against Gonzalez this season.
